The hidden cost of a disconnected customer journey
Picture someone finding your brand for the first time. They scroll past a reel that stops them mid-scroll. They tap through to your profile, like what they see, and sign up for your email list. A week later they click over to your website to learn more before they buy.
That's the customer journey. Most founders can describe it in theory. Very few have actually mapped what it feels like to live through it as a stranger encountering their brand for the first time.

The journey nobody maps
Every brand has a customer journey, whether or not anyone designed it on purpose. Social media is usually the front door. Email is the follow-up conversation. The website is where someone makes up their mind. Each one asks something different of your brand, and most founders build them at different times, with different priorities, often years apart.
The result is a journey nobody actually walked through end to end. It grew in pieces instead of being built as one path.
What mismatched touchpoints actually cost you
When the tone, visuals, or message shift between platforms, your ideal customer has to do extra work to figure out if they're still in the right place. Most people won't do that work. They'll assume the mismatch means something is off, even if nothing about your offer actually is.
This shows up as soft, hard-to-diagnose problems. Email open rates that don't convert. Social followers who never make it to the website. Website visitors who bounce before reading past the homepage. None of these look like a branding problem on the surface. They almost always are.
How we think about journey design
Instead of treating social, email, and web as three separate projects, we treat them as one continuous experience with three chapters. The voice that greets someone on Instagram should be recognizable in their inbox and unmistakable on your homepage. Not identical in format, since each platform has its own rhythm, but unmistakably the same brand underneath.
That's what it means to think holistically instead of channel by channel. It's the difference between a brand that feels stitched together and one that feels inevitable.
Start with an honest walk-through
If you want a gut check, try this: pretend you're a stranger discovering your brand for the first time. Follow the exact path a customer would take, social to email to website, and pay attention to where the tone shifts or the story loses momentum. Most founders find at least one gap they didn't know was there.
Leo + Laine is a branding and content agency that partners with founders who are ready to think about their brand holistically, not just channel by channel. If that's where you are, we'd love to talk.
